About this notice
Maps and Lanterns is operated personally by Deborah ‘Sankofa’ Talley. This notice explains how information is handled when you visit the website, contact us, leave a comment, or subscribe.
For privacy questions, email deborah@mapsandlanterns.org.
Contacting Sankofa
When you email us, we use your email address, your message, and any information you choose to provide to respond to your inquiry. Sending an email does not subscribe you to Lantern Letters.
Please avoid sending sensitive personal information that is unnecessary for your inquiry.
Lantern Letter subscriptions
We use Brevo to manage subscriptions and send emails. When you subscribe, Brevo processes your email address, subscription status, confirmation information, and delivery records.
Subscription information is kept while you remain subscribed. Unsubscribing stops Lantern Letter campaign emails but does not automatically delete your contact record or email history from Brevo. We retain your unsubscribe status to help prevent further campaign emails. You may contact us to request deletion of your personal information, subject to applicable requirements and permitted retention.
We use Brevo’s anonymous email tracking setting for transactional emails and email campaigns. Email opens and link clicks are tracked without being associated with specific contacts in engagement reporting. We use these reports to understand overall engagement and improve our communications.
Protection against automated submissions
Our subscription form uses Cloudflare Turnstile to help distinguish legitimate visitors from automated submissions. Cloudflare processes technical browser and device information for this verification.
See Cloudflare’s Turnstile Privacy Addendum.
Comments
When you leave a comment, WordPress collects the information entered in the comment form, along with your IP address and browser information. Comments are subject to manual approval. We also use Antispam Bee to screen comments for suspected spam. Approved comments and the name you provide may be displayed publicly; your email address is not displayed publicly.
If avatars are enabled, an anonymized version of your email address may be sent to Gravatar to check for a profile image. See Automattic’s privacy notice.
Website statistics
We use Jetpack Stats, provided by Automattic, to understand visits, popular pages, and referral sources. The service processes technical information such as IP addresses, browser details, pages visited, referring pages, and visit times. Our statistics reports do not identify individual visitors by name.
See Jetpack Stats privacy information.
Hosting, cookies, and external services
Bluehost hosts this website. Hosting and security services may process technical records needed to operate and protect it.
WordPress uses cookies for functions such as administrator login and, when selected, remembering comment-form details. Embedded third-party services may also process information under their own privacy notices.
Purchases through our Journal link take place on Lulu’s website. We do not collect payment-card details through that link. Other external purchase links are governed by the relevant seller’s privacy notice.
Sharing and retention
We do not sell your personal information. Service providers process information to support the functions described above. Information may also be disclosed when required by law.
Our service providers may process and store your information in countries other than the country where you live.
Routine email inquiries are generally deleted during a monthly review, approximately two years after the last exchange, unless needed for an ongoing matter or legal recordkeeping.
Approved comments and their associated information, including the commenter’s name and email address, are kept for as long as the article or page remains on the website. They may be deleted sooner at your request or during site moderation.
Subscription information is kept while you remain subscribed. After you unsubscribe, we retain only the information needed to honor your unsubscribe request and document your subscription consent.
Your choices
You may contact us to request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal information we hold about you, subject to applicable requirements and permitted retention.
Where applicable, you may raise a privacy complaint with the Information Regulator of South Africa or another privacy authority with jurisdiction.
